Centre In The Square Begins 2014 With An Exciting Array Of Artists

Centre In The Square welcomes an exciting array of artists and hit productions to the venue to kick-off the 2014 winter programming season.

Catch the worldwide party musical Rock of Ages, on February 3, featuring an irresistible mix of 28 rockin’ 80’s tunes. Five-time Tony® nominee, Rock of Ages is an arena-rock love story told through the mind blowing, face-melting hits of Journey, Night Ranger, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister and many more.

Classic Albums Live returns on February 6 with AC/DC: Back In Black, one of the most acclaimed and highest selling rock albums of all time.  Founded by Craig Martin, Classic Albums Live takes classic albums and recreates them live, on stage – note for note, cut for cut.

Enjoy a chance to get up close and personal with Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, the husband and wife duo behind Whitehorse, performing OnStage February 7 for their Centre debut.  Whitehorse’s live show is built on mesmerizing guitar work and smouldering vocal chemistry, but also brings much more to the stage with complex layers of percussion, keyboard and telephone receiver amplification, tangled like a sultry embrace with the help of looping pedals.

Edinburgh’s Puppet State Theatre debuts at The Centre on February 8 with a theatrical adaptation of Jean Giono’s environmental classic that tells the inspiring story of a shepherd who plants a forest, acorn by acorn, transforming a barren wasteland. As much a touching tale as it is a hilarious puppet show, The Man Who Planted Trees uses puppetry, storytelling and a dash of improvisation to show the difference one man (and his dog!) can make to the world.

Jeans ‘n Classics returns on February 19 and 20 with a new production An Evening of Pink Floyd – The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon featuring the Jeans ‘n Classics Rock Symphony led by Concertmaster Megan Jones.

Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman returns for another memorable concert experience on February 24.  Measha is critically acclaimed by the international press as much for her innate musicianship and voluptuous voice as for a sovereign stage presence far beyond her years.

March 4 brings the hilarious hit Menopause The Musical® to the Centre.  Four women at a lingerie sale with nothing in common but a black lace bra and memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, not enough sex, too much sex and more! This hilarious musical parody set to classic tunes from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s has audiences cheering and dancing in the aisles! See what millions of women worldwide have been laughing about for over 10 years!

On March 6, The Centre will co-present the Kitchener-Waterloo Festival Gala featuring Academy Award-winning comedian Steven Wright.  This gala event is hosted by Jon Dore and includes performances by Graham Chittenden, Gilson Lubin, Darcy Michael, Erica Sigurdson and Elvira Kurt.  Gala headliner Steven Wright is a regular guest with David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Craig Ferguson and continues touring the U.S., Canada and overseas. His comedy career includes comedy albums, film and television appearances.

Green Day’s American Idiot makes its Centre debut on March 8. A critical smash on Broadway and in London, the two-time Tony Award®-winning hit musical tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Based on Green Day’s GRAMMY® Award-winning multi-platinum album and featuring the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, “21 Guns”, “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track, American Idiot boldly takes the American musical where it’s never gone before. Directed by Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), the result is an experience The New York Times declares “thrilling, emotionally charged, and as moving as any Broadway musical I’ve seen this year!”  (Warning: Contains adult content and strong language.)

Hailed by CBC Radio for producing “Great, great theatre,” Old Trout Puppet Workshop is an internationally renowned puppet theatre company based in Calgary. Fast-Forward Magazine applauds their “mind-blowing originality…[The Trouts] are boldly reshaping puppet theatre into sophisticated adult entertainment.” Ignorance is a puppet documentary for adult audiences about the evolution of happiness – where did it come from and where did it go? Ignorance runs March 20 to 22 in the Studio Theatre.

Vancouver’s acclaimed contemporary dance company Kidd Pivot uses movement, original music, text, and sensational visual features, to create performances that balance exquisite form with irreverence and risk.  Under the direction of internationally renowned Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite, the company’s distinct choreographic language – a fusion of classical elements and the irresistible freedom of structured improvisation – is marked with theatrical sensibility and a keen sense of wit and invention. The company makes its Centre debut on March 25 with a new work, The Tempest Replica, based on motifs from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, in which Pite stages a game of revenge and forgiveness, reality and imagination.
