More Great Artists Coming To The Centre In 2014-15

Centre In The Square CEO Sandra Bender announced more programming details for 2014-15 starting with the free Opening Party on September 12 and 13 featuring awesome outdoor performances by international phenomenon Australia’s Strange Fruit in their Centre debut. Last year’s inaugural Opening Party event was a great success with more than 6,000 people in attendance for the weekend festivities.

A number of audience favourites will return in 2014-15 including The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Jim Cuddy, Colin James, and Steven Page. Many outstanding artists will make their Centre debuts including legendary singer songwriter Boz Scaggs, reggae artist Ziggy Marley, Great Big Sea’s lead vocalist Alan Doyle, along with must-see musicals The Book of Mormon and Million Dollar Quartet.

Based on last year’s success, the popular OnStage concerts return, with even more unique opportunities for audiences to get on stage and enjoy incredible performances by great music artists including Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, indie artist Owen Pallett, The Harpoonist & The Axe MurdererRoyal Wood, and Skydiggers.

The Centre has also significantly increased programming for kids and families buoyed by last year’s enthusiastic response to Saturday events in The Studio.

“Our focus continues to be on delivering the changes needed to revitalize The Centre as per our strategic plan. We are shifting away from the old rules and pushing forward in new directions with exciting programming and new ways of interacting with our audiences,” said CEO Sandra Bender. “We continue to concentrate on premieres – bringing in both established headliners as well as emerging artists who have never performed at The Centre. Attracting artists like Boz Scaggs, Ziggy Marley, along with major productions like the tour of The Book of Mormon are programming coups and we’re so proud to be able to bring these exceptional offerings to audiences in Waterloo Region.”

One major change is The Centre’s move to a year-round programming model rather than a “season” model in which all programming is announced in one block. “We’ve made this shift to enable us to stay relevant in the market and to keep people watching and listening to what’s going on at The Centre,” Bender explained. “It also allows us to take advantage of great opportunities when they come available – like we did last year with John Legend – and bring them to market in a timely way.”

The Centre has also moved away from subscriptions and instead has launched a new audience membership program with loyalty benefits. This membership program reinforces the switch to year-round announcements and programming. The Centre will continue to announce more exciting events for 2014-15 as new artists and shows are confirmed.
